“Doth suffer a sea change into something rich and strange.”

OK what happened this week? Sentiment seemed to swing from utterly dismal to resolutely euphoric. Some might call this kind of extreme volatility the sign of a bottom. But whatever the case, I seem to have picked a good week to start the portfolio.

Despite bad news on a couple of fronts the portfolio racked up a sizable gain for the week. The first week’s performance was a gain of 6.59%.

This compares to gains in the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P of 3.60%, 4.46%, and 2.86%, respectively.

Here’s the performance breakdown individually:

8/1/2008 8/8/2008 Change
Brunswick Corp (BC) 13.11 14.72 12.28%
Chico’s (CHS) 5.5 5.05 -8.18%
